Groceries were recently handed to Mahle Damoyi (21), residing at KwaMeyi Village in Umzimkhulu.
The officers from Umzimkhulu Correctional Centre under Kokstad Management Area subscribe to these words: ‘Blessed are the hands that give.’
Damoyi is the only surviving member of his family, as his grandfather died two weeks ago.
He took care of his grandfather after his mother died some years ago.
Sadly, Damoyi had to drop out of school due to financial constraints.
Umzimkhulu senior manager Delani Zuma motivated Damoyi to go back to school next year as it is the only route that could emancipate him from the bondage of poverty.
“Please notify me about your school needs like uniforms and stationery. I will see what to do and assist wherever I can,” pledged Zuma.
The condition under which Damoyi is living is deplorable. He uses firewood for cooking as he does not have a stove. Even the bed he sleeps on is not in good condition.
Damoyi was ecstatic about the donation from the officials.
“As officials of this department, we have donated to various organisations, families, and schools due to our spirit of philanthropy.”
