Athletes show prowess at disability games
The Provincial Disability Games aimed to promote inclusivity, unity, and excellence among athletes with disabilities in KZN.
Athletes from local municipalities under the Ugu District competed at the 2024 KZN Provincial Disability Games in Durban last week.
The Amajuba District emerged victorious with 14 points at the Victoria Mxenge Indoor Sport Centre in Umlazi. They were crowned by the KZN MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mntomuhle Khawula and the Head of Department, Dr Thobile Sifunda.
The eThekwini District secured second place with nine points, and Ilembe placed third with eight points.
Khawula said he appreciated the participants’ dedication and perseverance.
He said the games aimed to promote inclusivity, unity, and excellence among athletes with disabilities in the province.
“We congratulate District A (Amajuba) on their outstanding achievement and commend all participants for their dedication and perseverance. These games showcase the exceptional talent and resilience of our province’s athletes with disabilities,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sifunda said they are proud to support initiatives that promote inclusivity and empower people with disabilities through sports.
The winners are as follows:
Athletics – Amajuba, chess – Amajuba, football – Amajuba, goalball – eThekwini (male) and Ilembe (female), mlabalaba – Amajuba, netball – eThekwini, table tennis – Ilembe, and wheelchair basketball – uThukela
