Matrics urged to refrain from ‘Pens Down’ events
The KZN Department of Education is encouraging parents, guardians, and communities to work together with schools to prevent risky 'Pens Down' events.
Matriculants are encouraged to donate their school uniforms in gift packs to needy learners instead of tearing them up and writing on them in celebration of completing Grade 12.
The KZN Education MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, said this last Sunday when addressing the issue of ‘Pens Down’ events.
Hlomuka said the KZN Department of Education strongly discouraged the alarming and disruptive activities that often follow the conclusion of the Grade 12 examinations.
He said these activities include public drinking, vandalism, and inappropriate behaviour such as tearing and writing on school uniforms.
The MEC said these activities undermine the values of respect and responsibility they are striving to instil in learners.
“The department acknowledges that the completion of examinations marks a significant milestone. However, we urge learners to celebrate this achievement responsibly in a manner that reflects dignity and respect for themselves, their peers, and their communities,” said Hlomuka.
He added: “While we commend our learners for completing this critical chapter of their academic journey, we cannot condone activities that place them and others at risk. Let us prioritise safety, respect for property and the well-being of our communities during this time.”
Hlomuka said they encourage parents, guardians, and communities to work together with schools to prevent risky ‘Pens Down’ events.
He said learners should remember that their actions also reflect on their schools and families.
“As the matric examination approaches its conclusion, the department calls on various stakeholders to promote positive, meaningful celebrations that will inspire pride and uphold the values of discipline, integrity and respect,” he said.
The department encourages matriculants to collect their statement of results on January 14, 2025.
