Serial house robber sentenced to 25 years
In one case he threatened a resident with a hammer.
Sphamandla Richard Mpofana (31) was recently sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for house robbery.
After his arrest, Mpofana made a number of appearances in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court before being convicted and sentenced on November 5.
Detective Sergeant Michelle van Niekerk of Margate Detective Service linked Mpofana via fingerprints to the following three cases:
On February 23, 2017, Mpofana gained entry into a woman’s home in Shepstone Road, Shelly Beach and robbed her of jewellery, laptops and cellphones before fleeing.
On January 28, 2021, he assaulted a resident with a hammer who was returning home in Munroe Avenue in Margate. The resident had found the suspect in the garage helping himself to property. Mpofana took cash and fled.
Mpofana carried out another house robbery in Perch Road in Ramsgate on February 1, 2021.
Mpofana was leaving the property when the homeowner noticed him in the yard and attempted to hit him with a broom. He threatened her with a knife and fled.
