Accounting learner wins R500k bursary
The bursary allows him to study at any public university in a field of study of his choice.
Alizwa Mihlali Luna, a Grade 11 learner at Nombuso High School in KwaNzimakwe, recently received a bursary worth half a million rand for his tertiary education.
He won it in the 2024 Financial Literacy Speech Competition for schools.
In the district competition, which was held at Scottburgh High, he placed first and won a tablet and received certificates.
His winning streak continued in the provincial round, which was held in Pinetown, where he received an investment prize of R40 000.
He then placed first at nationals, where he received the bursary and another R40 000 investment prize.
“My school had a projector set up so they could watch me during the live national competition.”
Alizwa, who is in the accounting class, said he was amazed to be declared the winner as he was not expecting it.
He said the bursary allows him to study at any public university in a field of study of his choice.
“Honestly speaking, I have not decided what I want to study. As I am business-minded, I am thinking along the lines of an entrepreneur.”
He said he doesn’t want to study something he does not like just because he has a bursary.
Also, his accomplishment has opened doors for him as he has now been recognised by big companies.
The school is proud of his achievement and honoured him with a blazer.
Alizwa’s teacher, Sanelisiwe Phungula, described him as reserved but smart.
Phungula said they are very proud of him and that he has put the school’s name on the map, and she hopes that other learners will follow in his footsteps.
“Nombuso High is well-known because of our matric results; Alizwa’s win shows the calibre of learners we have in our school.”
