Friends release EP
The new extended play (EP) Makhelwane is available on all digital platforms.
Afro and deep house musician Simtholile Mthethwa Symtotic recently released an EP (extended play) titled Makhelwane.
Having grown up in Gamalakhe, Mthethwa featured two other artists, Sphamandla Dweba and Mzwakhe Dlamini.
Mthethwa said the song is about neighbours who always have much to discuss.
He said the song is basically asking people to take it easy and ‘chill’ a bit.
“I featured two of my friends with whom I work closely. Sphamandla Dweba, who is known as Freeq dB, and vocalist Mzwakhe Dlamini, who goes by the name April Muzik. The collaboration has been ongoing,” he said.
Mthethwa said he grew up in a musical family, and he was introduced to house music when he visited his cousin in Durban.
“I think I was 11 years old at the time. My cousin would teach me about different compilations, how to DJ and so on. I taught myself how to DJ using computer software. Later, I learnt how to use Compact Disk Jockey,” he said.
He said the journey has not been easy. Also, he wanted to get to know the business side of music and how to monetise it.
He said he bagged a chance to enrol at Creative Arts College, where he obtained a qualification as a sound engineer and producer.
He added that he has worked for KZN FM 93.6 as a technical producer.
Mthethwa said he hopes doors open for those interested in learning about the music industry.
“I started a company to teach aspiring musicians about the industry, but it did not take off as expected. However, it was a learning curve for me, and I’m looking forward to trying it again,” he said.
He added that Makhelwane can be found on all digital platforms.
