Summer season campaign kicks off in Ramsgate
The KZN Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs MEC said he was proud that the South Coast had seven beaches that boasted the internationally recognised Blue Flag status.
Holiday accommodation bookings on the South Coast are at a 74% occupancy rate between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Edtea) Reverend Musa Zondi revealed this figure at the launch of the Summer Season campaign under the theme ‘Magical Zulu Kingdom’ in Ramsgate last Saturday.
Zondi said the South Coast, along with the rest of KZN, is a unique destination that is rich in cultural traditions, history and heritage.
He said the region offered an unparalleled array of experiences one would not find anywhere in the world.
Zondi said he was proud that the South Coast had seven beaches that boasted the internationally recognised Blue Flag status.
He said this demonstrated the region’s dedication to international water standards, conservation, health and safety.
Zondi was accompanied by South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) chairperson Sandile Dlomo, KZN Sharks Board representative Babalo Mpaka, former minister Sibusiso Ndebele, Ugu District Municipality mayor Zero Mqadi, and others.
Dlomo urged people to use their holiday downtime to become ambassadors of KZN after exploring the beauty of the province and its rich history and heritage.
According to Mpaka, the KZN Sharks Board is working with its operations teams to ensure safety gear is back in the water, that boat tours are in operation, shark nets are in place, and that shark education tours are in place.
Meanwhile, Zondi said a tourism safety awareness campaign is being conducted on the border between South Africa and Lesotho to mobilise communities to play their part and empower tourists to travel safely.
He said KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli recently launched the Provincial Integrated Safer Festive Season Campaign and the signing of a Cooperation Agreement, marking a united commitment by law enforcement, local government and community stakeholders to bolster crime prevention efforts.
Zondi said these efforts were a collaboration between 184 KZN police stations and community organisations to enhance safety initiatives during the Christmas season, saying that the programme will run until the end of January 2025.
