New NPO elects committee
Women of Umzumbe thanked Ward 10 councillor Bernard Tyron for always being supportive of community-related issues.
A new non-profit, Women of Umzumbe (WoW), elected a committee in Mtwalume to lead in the fight against crime and women and child abuse under Umzumbe Local Municipality.
The organisation, which was launched in August, is under the leadership of chairperson Bongekile Sithole, who previously worked with Women of Mtwalume, a similar non-profit.
On the day of the committee’s election, Sithole thanked Ward 10 councillor Bernard Tyron for always supporting the community.
The committee includes Bongekile Sithole (chairperson), Nelisiwe Shangase (deputy chairperson), Busisiwe Cele (secretary), Zinhle Mbutho (deputy secretary), Thabile Shazi (treasurer), and additional members Nompumelelo Luthuli, Gloria Myende and Gugu Zulu.
Tryon said that WoW will assist in certain cases, as it’s not easy for the local forum to step in because of the nature of the cases.
“There are instances where an incident involves a girl child, and it’s not easy for men to go in and help. WoW can also help put pressure on court cases, as we know that sometimes court cases drag on. These women can help fast-track such cases.”
Tryon said that WoW not only deals with crime-related issues but also holds awareness campaigns and has a programme to help widows.
