Small craft harbours likely for coast
The conference was attended by stakeholders including business, government agencies and civic organisations.
Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) hosted a two-day investment conference at the Estuary Hotel in Port Edward recently.
Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Sihle Zikalala attended as the guest speaker on day two.
He emphasised the importance of working together to bring economic relief and to stimulate job creation.
The conference unpacked pathways to attract investors through infrastructure development, innovation and technology, as well as through the retail and manufacturing industries.
It was attended by stakeholders, including business, government agencies and civic organisations, to discuss various opportunities for investment promotion and retention.
Zikalala mentioned that RNM is the second largest tourism destination in KZN, and therefore should be looked at for investment.
HoD for Planning at RNM, Dalisu Zulu, said an established committee oversees development applications in the area.
He added they no longer have plans that are sitting in the office, which means developers receive a quick response.
Zulu said that this system is working well and allows them to attract investors.
Moshe Motlohi of Transnet said the entity has no future plans for the railway line to the South Coast, or some of the land that it owns.
“This does not mean that there will never be developments. Anyone who has plans and funds can always submit proposals or development plans, and if the idea is good, we would definitely look into it.”
He said that Transnet is looking more at private sector investment as it would stimulate the economy in the area.
Another interesting topic was the building of small craft harbours in Port Edward and Port Shepstone to boost maritime tourism.
Zikalala said talks on small craft harbours will be finalised by March 2025.
“We already have investors from China. We want this to happen as soon as possible because it’s a priority.”
He said discussions are also continuing regarding the smart city concept that would connect the Eastern Cape and KZN.
