Road safety: Avoid erratic drivers
Police say things that may trigger aggressive behaviour on the roads include following too close to the vehicle in front, passing vehicles on the left and cutting in and out of traffic.
With the festive season in full swing, Port Shepstone police urge motorists to be considerate of other road users.
Police said during this time of the year, when traffic is at its peak and drivers are often tired or impatient – safe driving can become a challenge.
Situations that may trigger aggressive behaviour include following too close to the vehicle in front, passing vehicles on the left, cutting in and out of traffic, failing to signal while engaging in multiple lane changes, crossing safety markings while merging onto ramps and failing to yield at ramps and intersections.
According to police, violations at railroad crossings, displaying or using a weapon, aggressive or obscene gestures, and slow-moving traffic in fast lanes can also result in aggressive behaviour.
To avoid trouble on the road, motorists are advised not to react to provocation, stay away from erratic drivers, avoid eye contact with an aggressive driver, and use their hooters sparingly.
Do not flash your headlights and make obscene gestures, change lanes without using your indicator, or block lanes.
