New home for disabled woman

Zodwa Mkhize of KwaBhokodisa in Gcilima could not contain her joy when she entered her new house last Friday.

Mkhize became disabled after she fell ill and is now wheelchair-bound.

The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, handed over the house to Mkhize.

According to Duma, Mkhize had received an RDP house previously; however, they had to build her another one because it was too far from the road and it was inaccessible.

He emphasised that according to the government, a person is not allowed to receive two RDP houses from the department.

For Mkhize to get a house closer to a road where a metered taxi would be able to fetch her, funding was sought from Duma’s political party.

Along with HoDs and other local political leaders, Mkhize received a fully furnished house and groceries.

“We had sponsors who contributed towards the project and helped us build this house,” added Duma.

Mkhize said she cannot do anything for herself, is going through a lot, and needs help.

Sometimes, she goes to hospital at least twice a month, and it was difficult to do so from her previous house.

Mhize says she will have the best Christmas in a fully furnished house.
