Transport committee presents Ugu draft budget
Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor Zodwa Mzindle said the engagement session provided clarity about which roads belonged to RNM and which belonged to the department.
Residents of Gamalakhe have asked the KZN Transport Portfolio Committee to rehabilitate the P200 from the Gamalakhe traffic lights to the Margate Airport.
They added that the department must also rehabilitate Knoxgore Road from the Gamalakhe traffic lights to St Mike’s close to the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.
This was a plea by Mbongeni Mthembu and Lindokuhle Hadebe at the Portfolio Committee on Transport stakeholders and public engagement session held at the ZG Community Hall recently.
The KZN Department of Transport was presenting its 2025/2026 annual performance plan and projects implemented in the Ugu district.
The Department of Transport Portfolio Committee’s chairperson, Maphisa Mncedisi, said R507 million was allocated to fix roads in Ugu.
“There are several projects in the pipeline for the district. Most roads are being built or will be built in the rural areas. Projects are proposed for all local municipalities under Ugu; these include Umuziwabantu, Umdoni, Umzumbe and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality,”
Maphisa added that the committee was in Ugu to hear from residents about which roads need to be prioritised.
Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor Zodwa Mzindle said they appreciated the engagement session as it provided clarity to residents about which roads belonged to RNM and which belonged to the department.
“When we do mayoral roadshows, we find that residents struggle to differentiate the two. There are several projects in the pipeline, including the road along the Mzimkhulu bridge. The construction of this road will benefit Wards 18, 16, 12 and 13. This is a welcome development, and we urge the department to try, and rehabilitate roads even in Hibberdene because the situation is bad,” said Mzindle.
Meanwhile, the KwaMavundla Traditional Council told the committee that they were concerned that there were little to no projects being planned for Gamalakhe.
They urged the committee to include Gamalakhe in the draft budget as there are roads that need the department’s intervention in the area.
