Empowering communities through chess
The tournament was an opportunity to promote library services, for people to connect, interact and build their local community.

Local chess club, The KZN Royals, were recently invited to the Umdoni Municipality Libraries’ chess tournament held in Scottburgh last Saturday.
Event co-ordinator of The KZN Royals, Charmaine Liddiard, said libraries are hubs of knowledge, and by organising a chess tournament, critical and strategic thinking are encouraged, which enhances cognitive skills.
She said the purpose of the tournament was to promote library services and provide an opportunity for people to connect, interact with, and build their local community.
Liddiard said the competition was overseen by the club’s president and head coach, Nduduzo Muthwa and Smangaliso Mdluli from Umdoni.
“Four rounds were played by the 20 team members, and from this, three winners emerged. In first place was Jaden Govender (Amanzimtoti High), second place was Lincoln Joubert (Scottburgh Primary) and in third place was Kyle Govender of Warner Beach Prep,” she said.
She explained that chess competitions in libraries are a creative way to engage with people, promote learning, and foster a community, all while supporting the library’s role as a cultural and educational centre.
“Congratulations to all involved, and thank you to Umdoni Municipality Libraries for a well-organised event,” she said.
