Rewards for Ugu’s top achievers
The class of 2024 started high school in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Laptops, cash prizes and certificates were given to the top achievers of the Ugu District who performed well during the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.
Ugu District Municipality organised an awards ceremony at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last Friday.
The Department of Education’s Ugu acting district director, Nkosinathi Madadi, circuit managers, teachers, and top achievers were invited to the event.
Madadi said the class of 2024 performed well.
“If you could take your minds back, this group was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. They were starting high school in 2020. We revised their curriculum so that they could get to the next grade, but along the way, we had to bring back the work to catch up so that when they got to the higher education phase, they had all the required skills,” he said.
He said they also appreciate the municipality for acknowledging teachers.
He said most communities forget to play their roles from the start, saying they only wait for the end when matric results are released.
Madadi said when people check newspapers for results, they want to see how their neighbour’s child performed.
“If the child performs well, they will be upset. If the child performs badly, they rejoice. Some play their roles in the true sense of the word right from the beginning until the end. And those are teachers. When they get to schools, they become parents, social workers, and police; they become everything. And as officials of the department, we expect teachers to deliver a curriculum,” he said.
He added that teachers go as far as starting afternoon, weekend, and holiday classes (unpaid for) so that the learners achieve excellent results.
Congratulating the class of 2024, the mayor of Ugu, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, encouraged learners to go to higher learning institutions to study and perform well.
Mqadi said after graduating, the learners must return to the district and uplift the community.
