All systems go for Umzumbe half marathon
Runners who have signed up for the 21km race stand a chance to walk away with R10 000.
Umzumbe Municipality is ready to host the annual Mfundo Arnold Lushaba Half Marathon at the Esibanini Sports Ground this Sunday (23rd) from 06:00.
Sabelo Ncwane, the municipal spokesperson, said it is all systems go for the much-anticipated event.
He said the event will feature 21km, 10km and 5km races.
He said runners who have signed up for the 21km race stand a chance to walk away with R10 000.
Ncwane said entries are still open.
“The half marathon is aimed at celebrating the life of struggle hero Mfundo Arnold Lushaba, who was also the first ANC mayor of Umzumbe Municipality. We are still calling on everyone who wishes to participate to register. Manual entries will be open on Saturday and also on Sunday morning before 06:00,” said Ncwane.
In 2024, 135 people participated.
Malineo Mahloko, who completed the 21km race in an hour and 24 minutes, won R 10 000 in the women’s category.
In the men’s 21km category, Nkululeko Mgubhela of the Zakhele Athletic Club won the race in an hour and seven minutes.
He also won R10 000.
“Umzumbe is the place to be this weekend. We want the race to contribute to the tourism of Umzumbe Municipality,” said Ncwane.
