Scam alert for Uvongo ratepayers
The Uvongo Ratepayers' and Residents' Association is concerned that residents' personal information could end up in the hands of some cryptocurrency agent or someone with ulterior motives.
There is only one Uvongo Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (URRA) in Ward 19 in Uvongo.
This was clarified by URRA chairperson Hardus Coetzee and vice-chairperson Gerhard van der Merwe after application forms to join a new URRA made the rounds on social media recently.
Coetzee said the association’s status quo remained as it has been for the last 18 years.
“To all Uvongo ratepayers and residents (Ward 19), please be advised that there is no new URRA being formed. The URRA status quo remains as it has been for the last 18 or so years. Please be very careful, and do not complete any application form for this group as it has no standing with the association. This intended group is not an official group with any legal standing within municipal regulations,” he said.
Coetzee added that personal information could possibly end up in the wrong hands and would not be protected by the POPI Act as the information would have been given voluntarily.
He added: “Your personal information could end up in the hands of some cryptocurrency agent or someone with ulterior motives other than the URRA business matters.”
Also, he said what was worrying was the new group claimed to want to provide some form of community service to Ward 19 residents, saying that if they wanted to start a new community service group outside of the scope of business of the URRA, then they could do so under their own banner or name.
“They can join any of the various existing Uvongo community groups to ply their intended projects. Finally, if the URRA committee business does not meet their envisaged goals, for whatever reasons, then they can, by all means, call a public meeting in a public venue and establish their new group. The URRA will not permit them to ride on the back of our established committee to achieve their goals,” he said.
Coetzee further described the group as a scam asking Uvongo residents to be very careful of their money and personal information.
