Donation to enhance learning at childhood centre
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development said early childhood development centres play an important role in laying the foundation for lifelong learning and success.
Items such as desks, chairs, a printer, toys, and mattresses were donated to the Esbonelelo Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) in Umzumbe.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development Mbali Shinga handed over the donations to the centre on Tuesday last week.
Shinga said she saw the need to donate after her last visit to the centre.
She said the materials were essential in enhancing the learning and development environment for the children and staff.
“In a significant move a few years ago, all ECDs were handed over to the Department of Education, and social workers were also transferred to the Department of Education, marking a new chapter in their journey. This transition ensured that the centres received sustained support and resources from the departments, further solidifying their role as cornerstones of early childhood education in the community,” said Shinga.
Shinga, who is also the KZN Legislature’s Ugu District champion, said early childhood development centres play a pivotal role in laying the foundation for lifelong learning and success.
She said by addressing the needs of these centres, they are investing in the future of children and, by extension, communities.
Meanwhile, Silindile Shezi of the Esbonelelo said: “We are thankful for the support and care shown by MEC Shinga. These donations will make a huge difference in the lives of our children and the staff at the centre. It is heart-warming to see our leaders taking the time to understand our needs and taking action to improve our community.”
