On rainy days, it’s a challenge for the community of Bhuqu in Ward 24 in Bhomela to cross the Bhuqu River via the Manukuza Bridge, a low-level bridge.
Unfortunately, residents don’t have a choice.
An elderly woman, Ntombifikile Mthethwa, said it’s a huge problem, especially as children have to cross the river to attend school.
Mthethwa not only helps her grandchildren but any child to cross safely.
“We don’t know how to swim, but we have no choice. We have been pleading and asking for help; our children are too young to die.”
A community member, Sibongile Khumalo, said sections of the bridge were washed away during the floods.
“Older people have drowned in this river, so we are scared for our children. Every morning, we accompany them so they can cross, and every afternoon, we wait for their return.
Also, Khumalo has spoken to the principal that the children will not attend school when it rains because some have lost their belongings in the water, including their school bags.
Lindi Khwela, who was a ward committee member, said she reported the issue in 2023. Leaders assessed the situation but did not return.
“They took photos, and they told us that they would fix it. This bridge was built years ago, so we are now pleading with the government to help us. During funerals, it is hard to get the coffin across, and we have to find other means. “
Furthermore, she said she raises the matter at meetings; however, she is dismissed.
The spokesperson for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Nomusa Zulu, said that their teams will investigate the state of the bridge and make recommendations for further action.
