Golden Games bring pensioners together
The event was about celebrating life, culture and the enduring spirit of senior citizens.
Despite being cut short due to inclement weather, participating provinces at the Golden Games held in Rustenberg last week were awarded medals and trophies for their efforts.
The Department of Social Development’s deputy minister, Ganief Hendricks, said the games were not just about competition but about celebrating life, culture, and the enduring spirit of senior citizens.
Hendricks praised the resilience and determination of all participants and emphasised the importance of such initiatives in fostering social cohesion and promoting active ageing.
He said each province brought its unique flair to the stage through choir performances, which was the highlight.
“The harmonious melodies and vibrant performances were a testament to the rich diversity of South Africa’s cultural heritage. It left the audience in awe and served as a reminder of the power of music to unite people. From indoor games to storytelling sessions, the senior citizens were treated to a memorable experience beyond the competition. The participants’ smiles indicated that the Golden Games had achieved their goal of bringing joy and a sense of accomplishment to all involved,” said Hendricks.
He added that the department would announce the next host province soon.
“The Golden Games may have ended; however, the memories, friendships and cultural exchanges will undoubtedly linger in the hearts of all who attended.”
