Call to action on International Women’s Day

It was a powerful reminder of the strides made and the work still ahead.

Government policies must reflect the urgency of empowering women.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli said this at an International Women’s Day celebration in Durban on Saturday (March 8).

Ntuli was with the KZN Legislature’s and Ugu district’s Mbali Shinga (KZN Social Development MEC).

Ntuli said International Women’s Day was a powerful reminder of the strides made and the work still ahead.

He said the day honoured women’s achievements, raised awareness about gender inequality, and accelerated progress toward a more equitable world.

“In KwaZulu-Natal, we are committed to dismantling systemic barriers that hinder women’s progress, from advocating for equal pay to expanding access to education and healthcare. When women thrive, our economy, communities, and future generations thrive with them,” said Ntuli.

Meanwhile, Shinga said the day highlighted the resilience and leadership of women who shape the province and nation.

She said the celebration must translate into action.

“We are partnering with grassroots organisations to provide mentorship, resources, and opportunities for girls and women in rural and underserved areas. Addressing gender-based violence, improving maternal health, and investing in women-led businesses are non-negotiable priorities. Let us challenge biases and uplift women’s voices in every sphere,” she said.

Shinga said International Women’s Day was not just a celebration but a call to action.

Rooted in over a century of activism, Shinga said the day honoured pioneers who fought for suffrage, labour rights, and dignity.

She said it challenged everyone to confront persistent barriers, the gender pay gap, underrepresentation in leadership, systemic violence, and limited access to education and healthcare for millions globally.

Shinga said when women thrive, economies grow, communities flourish, and future generations are empowered.

“The provincial government reaffirms its commitment to advancing equity through policies supporting equal pay, parental leave, and career development for women. Aligned with this year’s theme, the province is amplifying partnerships with non-profit organisations to empower girls through education, skills development, and resource access.”
