Work experience stipends for agriculture students
Funding was secured for over 100 students for 18 months.
Esayidi TVET College in Oslo Beach hosted agriculture students last week who were selected to participate in a work experience programme.
The assistant director for partnership and linkages at TVET, Nothando Mthiyane, said before students graduate, they have to complete an internship.
“During the internship, they should at least be paid a stipend. The college does not have a budget for stipends, so we try and find internships through the Sector Education and Training Authority.”
These students will receive stipends from the South African Public Colleges Organisation (SAPCO).
This year, funding was secured for over 100 students for 18 months.
Bongi Perman from SAPCO said the students will receive R5 500 each.
“To qualify, a student must be aged 18 to 35 and hold an NCS in farming management. Today, we are here to do an induction to tell the students what is expected of them, the benefits they will be getting, and the benefits to the farmers who will be helping them with their training.”
SAPCO works with colleges that have farming management courses.
According to Mthiyane, two former students who now own farms will work with the college to groom the new students.
