Concern over local soccer academies

There are U17 teams where 19 and 20-year-olds are allegedly playing in local leagues.

The Sport Table (TST) Football Club coach, Tino Ndwalane, has raised concerns about soccer academies in the Ugu region.

Ndwalane alleged cheating when it came to the ages of the players.

“I am worried about the many soccer academies that have opened in the Ugu district. There are complaints of age cheating, which is killing football. I feel sorry for all the children eager to build names for themselves by joining the ‘illegal’ academies. I know of an U17 team of a certain academy where 19 and 20-year-olds are playing in the regional league. Also, 23 and 25-year-olds play for U19 teams,” said Ndwalane.

He added that it was sad to see children who use their correct age lose against people who are older than them.

“When I get an explanation as to why football clubs that have better resources cheat players’ ages, I will be happy,” said Ndwalane.
