Blooming success for gardening book
The authors shared their wealth of botanical knowledge, offering essential tips on plant selection, landscaping, and garden maintenance.
Renowned botanist, landscaper, and author Dr Elsa Pooley launched her latest book, South African Indigenous Garden Plants: The Gardener’s Guide, in Scottburgh last week.
The book was co-authored by Geoff Nichols (a renowned horticulturist, indigenous garden designer, natural historian, and author of several books) and Andrew Hankey (a highly experienced botanical horticulturist).
This was a decade-long passion project for all three contributors, none of whom benefited financially from the sales.
Through sponsorships, they managed to make the 3kg book more affordable to the public.
Its content covers an incredible 10% of South Africa’s 24 000 flora, showcasing the country’s incredible biodiversity, with a specific focus on plants ideal for local gardens.
“We produced the kind of book that the three of us would like to use. It’s user-friendly, the text is short, there are lots of beautiful pictures, and it works. We have already had such an incredible response to the book,” said Pooley.
South African horticulturist Keith Kirsten also attended the launch.

The event also marked the launch of Botanical Bounty of the Pondoland Centre of Endemism by Kate and Graham Grieve, co-written with Dirk Bellstedt.
Both books celebrated the rich biodiversity of the country.
