Keen swimmers take to the pool
232 aspiring swimmers participated in the three-day learn to swim programme at the Gamalakhe Swimming Pool.
Fun splashing dominated the Gamalakhe Swimming Pool at a learn-to-swim programme last week.
Gamalakhe Blue Sharks Aquatics Club chairperson Nontokozo Mchunu said the swimming programme was successful.
She said on the first day, they had 77 swimmers, with 66 participants on April 4 and 89 on the last day.
Swimming instructors Sinentokozo Cele and Eric Jula facilitated the lessons.
“The programme invited children from eight years old to older people. The initiative was for those who can and cannot swim. It was also aimed at raising awareness,” she said.
She added: “Swimming is more important nowadays, especially with the severe weather conditions; it could help people protect themselves from drowning during heavy rain. The programme was an initiative of Swimming South Africa in partnership with KZN Aqautics, Ugu Aqautics, and South Coast swimming coaches.”
She explained that the programme has always been a school holiday initiative.
“Even adults supported the programme, and they expressed interest in joining the Gamalakhe Blue Sharks Aquatics Club. The club meets from Tuesday to Friday, from 14:00 to 17:00 and on Saturday, from 08:00 to 10:00,” she said.
