Six young tennis players from Gcilima recently embarked on their first official match against juniors from Southbroom Tennis Club.
Initially, it was supposed to be eight vs eight, but only six could make it from Gcilima – and then seemingly every junior in Southbroom arrived to play, watch or just be part of the fun.
Sharon van der Schyff (Ugu Tennis Association) was delighted with the response and said there was a wonderful atmosphere on the day.
“It was quite an occasion for the Gcilima youngsters, playing in their first competitive match,” she said.
The result wasn’t too important; what mattered was the opportunity, experience and joy of the occasion.
“It was wonderful to see some of our better players helping them with scoring, court position and cheering them on,” said Sharon.
