R15m grant for Ugu water projects
KZN Cogta MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezi said the additional funding allocated to these municipalities was based on their effective utilisation of previous allocations.
An allocation of R15m has been made to Ugu District Municipality to augment water infrastructure projects.
Ugu’s spokesperson, France Zama, said the municipality has unreservedly welcomed the allocation received under the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG).
He said the funding is geared towards assisting the municipality in accelerating the reduction of water supply backlogs in the district.
The Department of Water and Sanitation decided to increase the allocation of critical grant funding aimed at improving water access within various municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal.
The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, welcomed the decision on Tuesday last week.
Buthelezi said the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG) and the WSIG are important instruments designed to assist municipalities with water authority status in expanding access to water services.
He said that aside from Ugu District Municipality receiving an additional allocation under the Water Services Infrastructure Grant of R15m, Newcastle has an allocation of R15m, along with Amajuba District Municipality.
Meanwhile, Zululand received an allocation of R55 434 000.
Buthelezi said Zululand received an additional allocation of R217 247 000 under the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant.
“The total additional grant allocation to the mentioned municipalities amounts to R317 681 000. These funds will ensure that water supply reaches all communities of KZN,” he said.
Justifying the allocations, Buthelezi said the additional funding allocated to these municipalities was based on their effective utilisation of previous allocations.
