DJ Bruce drops soulful music project

Rising from the heart of Murchison, Sihle Bruce Jalubani, better known as DJ Bruce, has released a debut solo Extended Play (EP) titled ‘Umphikeleli’.

Released in March, DJ Bruce explained that the title was deeply rooted in meaning and family legacy.

He described it as a soulful Amapiano project.

“Also referred to as ‘Private School Amapiano’, it is a celebration of perseverance, passion, and the power of music. Umphikeleli, meaning ‘the one who perseveres’, is a name given to me by my grandmother. It speaks about the journey of overcoming obstacles and staying committed to your dream even when the road gets tough,” said DJ Bruce.

The musician explained that the EP drew inspiration from the rich sounds of soulful Amapiano blended with jazz elements, offering listeners a deep, emotive, and uniquely South African soundscape.

Available now on all digital platforms, DJ Bruce said Umphikeleli marks a new chapter for him – one that builds on years of hard work and creative growth.

He said his journey in music began in 2003 when he volunteered at Radio Sunny South.

It was where he met DJ Qhawe, who introduced him to the art of deejaying using turntables and vinyl.

“That early mentorship sparked a flame that has burned ever since,” he said.

A few years later, DJ Bruce connected with Harding-born producer Sphiwe Jula.

Together, they formed the duo Mystic Soul and released their first collaborative album, Soul Assertions 1, in 2011.

The two have reunited on Umphikeleli, keeping the spirit of soulful collaboration alive.

When asked about his ambitions, DJ Bruce is clear: “I want to create music that reflects real lives, dreams, and challenges of ordinary people. I aim to make a meaningful impact, especially by inspiring the youth from underprivileged communities. I also want to help put the South Coast on the map – this place is rich in beauty and talent – it deserves to shine.”
