Challengers can’t keep Snipers at bay
It was an excellent way for 48 primary school boys to spend the day.
Junior cricketers took advantage of the May 1 public holiday to enjoy an Action Cricket festival.
The coast has two clubs from which teams are chosen or recruited, namely the South Coast Snipers and RC Challengers, and there’s a friendly rivalry between the two.
The former teams comprised Snipers, Renegades and Sluipskutters while the latter had the Challengers, Chargers and Chasers.
Teams played pool games against each other, followed by semi-finals and then rounding things off with a gold, bronze and plate final.
At the end of it all, it came down to the very last ball, with Snipers avoiding being dismissed to win by four runs against the Challengers.
The final score of the gold final was 67-63 in what was a seesaw, rollercoaster game. Great to watch.
The Snipers team comprised Christiaan Otto, Ndu Shusha, Oliver Smith, Jacob Steynberg, Karlo Jacobs, Damion Bezuidenhout, Khulu Mlondo and Bertu van Reenen.
Challengers had Benjamin Kunz, Jaydon Koekemoer, Daniel Rush, Ndumiso Mwelase, Francois Smit, Stiaan Fritz, Marcel van Etteryk and Lutho Menziwa.
Player of the day and winner of a bat was Benjamin Kunz. He led the run-scoring with 88 on the day and also picked up seven wickets.
The bronze final was won by the Renegades over the Chargers 129-86.
In the plate final, the Sluipskutters beat the Chasers 47-2 helped by Ruben van Reenen, who filled in as a player failed to pitch on the day.
All in all, it was a good day of cricket, with a number of boys experiencing this version of the sport for the first time.
