Ugu bus service halted

Ugu Transport Services brought operations to an abrupt halt last week, leaving many commuters stranded across the Ugu District.

In a statement, the bus company said they stopped operations due to non-payment from the KZN Department of Transport.

“Bus services were halted due to the difficulties between Ugu Transport Services and the provincial Department of Transport. We want to inform our passengers that buses will not be available from Friday, May 3, until the department addresses the financial situation,” read the statement.

Ugu Transport Services said the company had not been paid the money it is owed since January 2025.

It said that as a company, it has been struggling to cover its diesel costs, staff salaries, bus repairs and other safety and security needs for buses and passengers.

“We will notify the public if there are any changes to the buses returning to service,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, KZN Transport and Human Settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the department was aware of the issue.

“MEC Siboniso Duma is aware of the glitches in the basic accounting system as a result of the migration from the old system to the new system by the National Treasury. This has affected the payment to service providers across government departments. Some service providers were recently paid, and there are service providers that still need to be paid. The MEC has apologised to the service providers. The payments will come through. We will update the people of KZN and service providers,” said Sibiya.
