Radio Sunny South still off air
The radio station in Oslo Beach was last on air in December 2023.
There is little hope, if any, that once popular community radio station, Radio Sunny South 97.0FM will return to air in the near future. In fact, it seems like it’s back to square one, as a new application has to be made for a broadcasting licence.
The radio station in Oslo Beach was last on air in December 2023 after a difference of opinion between the management and staff.
It is believed the matter escalated after the suspension of the head of the news department, Amon Nhlumayo, by station manager Sphiwe Yeni. At the time, it was alleged that Nhlumayo had failed to comply with a directive from Yeni.
Furthermore, it’s believed that other presenters and journalists who had sympathised with Nhlumayo changed the gate keys to ensure no one had access to the studio. This is when the station went off air.
To make matters worse, the radio station was burgled twice in a space of three months, and broadcasting equipment was stolen.
Reverend Bhekani Sincadu, the chairperson of the Board of Directors at the station was contacted for comment.
He said: “We met with the existing committee and agreed to re-apply for a licence. We will try to return on air, and we will also change the station’s name. We have some challenges such as finances, and we also found out that others are also applying for licences.”
