Woman needs help to find true identity
She estimates her age at 36, but she is unsure because she claims she has never had a birth certificate.
Phelisa Princess Nogoda from Gamalakhe, originally from Bizana, is crying out for help to find her true identity.
The young woman who prefers to call herself Zama, says life has become complicated.
She estimates her age at 36, but she is unsure because she claims she has never had a birth certificate.
She said when she had to do her ID, her mother did not know where her birth certificate was nor did not know when she was born.
“I grew up knowing her as my mother, but I got confused when she started asking people at home when I was born and about my birth certificate.”
She said eventually her mother gave her an A4 sheet of paper saying it was her birth certificate and she could use it to apply for her ID.
However, it took her several years to get an ID because there was issues and she had to re-apply a number of times.
Zama alleges that the identity (Phelisa Princess Nogoda) is of a dead child, but the death was not registered at the Department of Home Affairs.
She further alleges she found out when she did her own investigation that her mother was not her biological mother, and that she had a baby who had died and used that baby’s identity for her.
“It got to a point where I tried to find my father’s family, fortunately, I found them and they accepted me. The problem is that they did not have any information about my biological mother and since my father had died, we could not trace her.”
Zama has since found her biological mother.
She said she has been advised by social workers that she needs a DNA sample from both women for a DNA test.
However, she does not work and cannot afford to pay for the test.
