Bridge in Mathulini requires urgent repairs
A resident who wished to remain anonymous said it has been months since the bridge washed away in a flood.
Residents of Mathulini in Mtwalume are unhappy that a bridge over the Dankane River near eNkanini Indoor Sports Centre, which washed away in a flood, has not been repaired as yet.
They say it seems as if officials no longer care about their safety or that of their vehicles.
A resident who wished to remain anonymous said it has been months since the bridge washed away in a flood and repairs are urgently needed.
“This is shame, we should not call it a bridge. We need help while it’s winter, with less rain. If the bridge is not repaired before the return of heavy rains, there will be a problem.”
Another resident said he feels pity for those who use the bridge daily. “You asked me about the bridge, which one, because we can’t call this a bridge. The authorities who are paid for doing their jobs must be accountable. They must fix this mess.”
As the bridge is in the jurisdiction of Umzumbe Local Municipality, the municipal spokesperson, Sabelo Ncwane said they are aware of the situation and will attend to it.
“The municipality did do a temporary intervention, which was washed away during the rains. We have also submitted our assessment to the National Disaster Fund for funding in order to build a permanent structure. In the meantime, our team will redo the temporary intervention, hoping that it will last as we are not in the rainy season,” said Ncwane.
