Destitute former soldier needs a house
The acting spokesperson of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM), Nomusa Zulu, said the municipality is aware of the demand for low-cost housing, particularly among vulnerable groups, and currently has a number of low-cost housing projects under implementation as well as others in various stages of planning.
A destitute former MK liberation soldier has received basic necessities from the MK Party, but more needs to be done as he is in desperate need of a house.
The MK Party recently issued a statement of concern about the conditions under which MK Commander Fano Mzizi lives in Qinabout’s Ward 26 near Gamalakhe.
One of the MK Party branch leaders, Pastor Jabulani Lushaba, expressed his shock. He said Mzizi is a patriotic freedom fighter and that it is sad to see him still living under appalling conditions in a shack.
“He does not enjoy the fruits of freedom he fought for,” said Lushaba.
Another MK Party leader from Gamalakhe’s Ward 5, Siphelele Nzimande, said on hearing about Mzizi’s misery they asked the community for donations and their own members who donated necessities.
“We visited Mzizi with food parcels and clothes, so that he can eat and warm up as winter approaches, but we appeal to businesses for donations because we want to build him a proper house,” said Nzimande.
Nzimande said it’s unfortunate that after 30 years of freedom in this country, Mzizi a freedom fighter, is still living under deplorable conditions and that the GNU leaders don’t care about him and others who fought for it. “We will knock on the doors of the business community and request them to donate materials to build him a house,” said Nzimande.

We do acknowledge that there is a backlog and in response we encourage all individuals in need of housing assistance to visit our offices in Protea Road, Marburg to register their details on the National Housing Needs Register (NHNR). This system plays a crucial role in ensuring that needs are accurately recorded and considered in future housing allocations. In cases of emergencies, support may be provided through the Operation Sukuma Sakhe programme,” said Zulu.
