Art groups to compete on stage
The festival was established in 2011, and two years later, the then Hibiscus Coast Municipality, now Ray Nkonyeni Municipality pledged to fund the project.
Various local arts production groups are preparing to battle it out for the title of Inkundla Theatre Festival 2025 winner.
The competition run by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) will be held at the Uvongo Town Hall this Friday (30th) from 09:00.
The festival’s project manager, Siya Sotsu, said auditions were hosted throughout RNM, and talent was identified.
He said those who were identified have attended workshops and coached on stage presence to develop their production and professionally tell their stories, so that they can be ready for bigger stages.
Sotsu who is also the Margate Art Museum curator explained that the festival was established in 2011, and two years later, the then Hibiscus Coast Municipality, now RNM, pledged to fund the project.
He added the festival was created to respond to the challenges faced by artists.
These challenges included a platform or space to showcase their work, and also to administer the work they do.
“RNM decided to create this space for artists for free and fund the project so that whoever participates is compensated. The funds allocated to the project will never be enough for everyone,” he said.
Excited about this year’s edition, Nokubonga Luthuli of Mshibe Arts Production said she enters every year.
“My love for acting started in 2008 when I was still at Galeni High. This is where I found out that one of my teachers had a drama group Thokoza Cultural Group, which I later joined. This is where my love for theatre started. The show I put together will blow people away,” she said.
