Family matters workshop empowers parents
The initiative was developed in response to heartfelt appeals from children who called for their parents to receive training on how to better support and raise them.
Young parents benefited from a three-day family matters parenting workshop held at the AB Gigaba Hall in Izingolweni last week.
Organised by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development in partnership with the Zomnotho organisation, the programme formed part of Child Protection Month activities
According to the department, the initiative was developed in response to heartfelt appeals from children who called for their parents to receive training on how to better support and raise them.
KZN Social Development spokesperson Thuba Vilane said in alignment with the Voices of Children campaign, the programme served as one of the flagship activities rolled out across districts to amplify children’s voices and strengthen family structures.
“The final day of the workshop featured a dynamic child-parent feedback and engagement session, where children were updated on the progress of the Voices of Children interventions. They were also given a platform to express their views, suggest protective messages, and highlight peer behaviours that negatively affect their well-being,” said Vilane.
He added that a child-parent dialogue followed, encouraging open discussions between children and their caregivers.
Topics of discussion included the violation of children’s rights, challenges in the school environment, substance abuse, and the critical role families and the media play in child protection.
Vilane said the initiative marked a build-up to International Children’s Day and underscored the department’s commitment to holistic, child-centred approaches that place children and families at the heart of protection efforts.
