March emphasises children’s rights
The KZN Department of Social Development MEC, Mbali Shinga, urged the public to ensure that the most vulnerable members of society are not abused.
Every child must have access to healthcare, education and safety.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development MEC, Mbali Shinga, said this at an International Children’s Day event at the AB Gigaba Community Hall in Izingolweni on Sunday.
Shinga was accompanied by representatives of the South African National Taxi Council and the leadership of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality including the mayor Zodwa Mzindle, speaker Phumlani Gumbi and deputy mayor Sibusiso Shange.
The MEC said the objective of the commemoration was to guarantee that every child has access to healthcare, education and safety.
“It’s time to honour childhood delights and emphasise the value of nurturing and protecting children, which will ultimately put an end to violence against children in our communities,” she said.
Shinga added that children should strive to eliminate the socially detrimental elements in their communities and have faith in their abilities.
She said it was their collective duty as community members to put an end to violence against children.
The MEC urged the public to ensure that the most vulnerable members of society are not abused in observance of International Children’s Day and Child Protection Month.
“We have it in our hands to end violence against children,” she said.
Meanwhile, as part of the celebrations, young maidens joined the MEC and civil society organisations in a march to emphasise children’s rights.
