Surfer scores perfect 10-point ride
Surfers now gear up for the Rip Curl GromSearch Scottburgh this weekend.
Rising surfing star Clay Turrell of Southport scored a stunning 10-pointer on a wave at the recent Ugu Surfriders’ trials at St Mike’s Beach.
Clay wowed judges in the semi-final heat, earning this rare perfect score, the highest score a surfer can receive for a single wave in a heat.
It represents flawless execution, exceptional timing and technique, combining difficulty, style, power and innovation.
Clay said the waves were about six to eight foot – and pumping.
“My goal going into that heat was to get a excellent scoring ride so when I saw the biggest wave of the day approaching I knew it was an opportunity.”
Clay explained that he threw everything into that wave and ended up all the way down the beach.
“When I came running past the judges and heard it was a 10, I was super stoked, definitely a very special wave for me.”
* Side note: There are four trials for SA Champs, and the best three trials count to make the team. The fourth trial will be held at the end of July/August.
Junior surfers will be in action at Scottburgh Beach for the Rip Curl GromSearch this weekend (June 13 to 15).
