Ugu launches Mayoral Cup
The event will be held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on July 12.
Ugu District Municipality launched its first-ever Mayoral Cup at La Mingqy’z Restaurant in Margate recently.
The event was attended by local municipality mayors, politicians as well as business people.
The games will be played at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on July 12.
“We received a lot of sponsorship from business people, as the municipality we only contributed a small amount to the Mayoral Cup because we have a lot to deal with in terms of service delivery, especially water,” said Ugu mayor Sikhumbuzo ‘Zero’ Mqadi.
He added that the event will also help in the selection of the best of the best for the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) games taking place in December.
Mqadi said that they were hoping to host this year’s SALGA games, but it didn’t happen.
He said they have not lost hope and they are lobbying for next year’s games to be held in Ugu.
Also, Mqadi added that they would like to bring back all the events that attracted tourists to the district.
He mentioned that they brought back the Ugu Jazz Festival, and urged Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor Zodwa Mzindle to bring back the Bike Festival next year.
He said that their vision is to grow the economy in the district as it’s a tourist destination.
Ugu District Sports Confederation chairperson, Lucky Gumede, said that the Mayoral Cup reminds him of the Winter Games hosted by Ugu many years ago, and was helpful in the SALGA games, where Ugu did well.
“This is an opportunity for the youth of Ugu to prepare for the SALGA games. We will be able to compete and not only participate in the games.”
Gumede said that good results at SALGA are not determined by the position they get, but how much their players achieved.
He said that Ugu has done well in previous years because a number of players were selected for professional teams.
