Audition open for choral music lovers
The Gamalakhe Gospel Choir is looking for 30 voices.
Aspiring singers aged 15 and older who have a love for choral music are invited to audition for the Gamalakhe Gospel Choir at the Gamalakhe Library boardroom on July 19 at 13:00.
The Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa (CCIFSA) in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) is organising the audition.
The secretary of CCIFSA in RNM, Nhlakanipho Thutshini, said the audition aims to develop music talent in the municipality.
Thutshini said CCIFSA has nine sectors: cultural and national heritage, performance and celebration, visual arts and crafts, languages and publishing, audio-visual and interactive media, design and creative support services, arts education and training, indigenous wisdom and arts, culture, and heritage technical support services.
He explained that the auditions mostly focus on youth development.
Thutshini, who is a musical director, said they are looking for 30 voices – 15 females and 15 males.
“Those who win will be trained, so that they are equipped for the music industry. This will also help to minimise youth being idle,” he said.
He added that they will organise practice sessions and rehearsals for those who have won.
He explained that with the audition, they are trying to build a foundation.
“This foundation will develop young talent before allowing them to spread their wings. There are no prizes to be won. This audition is solely for scouting talent and developing them. We need 30 voices to start with and we will build from there,” he said.
Meanwhile, the chairperson of CCIFSA in RNM, Mthembeni Mbili, said they need support and sponsorship for the audition as well as develop the talent they find.
“We are pleading with local businesses, our municipalities, and other stakeholders to assist us as the arts sector in RNM. This work is not minor and it won’t end here. Choirs were big once and we are trying to bring that back. We need music equipment to work; for now, we will use what we have. We also need sound, transport, costumes, water, and any other donations to assist us,” he said.
