South Coast actor wins big at awards
The awards were hosted by Mtwalume-born actress Hope Mbhele along with Nay Maps.
Izingolweni’s Kwenzokuhle Ngcobo took home the Best Actor Award at the 12th annual Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre last Saturday.
The 33-year-old bagged the award for his role on eTV’s Scandal.
Ngcobo said he developed an interest in acting at a young age.
The talented actor made waves in the South African entertainment industry after appearing on the popular show Imbewu: The Seed.
However, his breakout role in The Wife made him a household name in South African soapies.
The theme for this year’s awards was: ‘Africa’s Giants of Storytelling: From Piers to Pages’, which captured the spirit of a night rooted
in heritage, creativity, and excellence.
The awards were hosted by Mtwalume-born actress Hope Mbhele along with Nay Maps, who kept the audience energised with their warmth and wit.
Mbhele brought the house down when she spontaneously broke into a powerful isiZulu praise song – a true tribute to African spirit and storytelling.
The COO at the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority, Jackie Motsepe said: “It was a night that affirmed the power of African storytelling. From newcomers to legends, our creatives are shaping culture and inspiring futures. We’re proud to see KZN emerging as a strong player on the African and global film map. The Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards continue to honour excellence while driving the industry forward.”
Motsepe said July marked Film Month in KwaZulu-Natal, and the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards are strategically celebrated alongside the Durban International Film Festival and Durban FilmMart – where the world’s most influential film and television industry figures converge for networking, screenings and honouring cinematic achievement.
She said the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards was a flagship initiative of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority, aimed at recognising and uplifting the province’s and continent’s best in film and television.
