Help the hands that feed the hungry

Hot vegetarian meals are distributed from Hibberdene to Margate including Marburg, Port Shepstone and Masinenge.

Hibiscus Food for Life, a non-profit in Port Shepstone provides meals to underprivileged communities, focusing on children and the elderly.

Since 1990, the organisation has fed thousands of people via donations for its feeding schemes, which of late, has dwindled.

At first, it fed hungry street children in the Port Shepstone CBD after collaborating with Port Shepstone Child Welfare.

Then, a principal from a neighbouring rural area noticed the feeding scheme and mentioned that learners in her school experienced severe poverty. Many of the learners didn’t have meals on weekends and the principal requested the organisation’s founder, Rajen Mahabeer, to feed them on a Saturday.

“We fed in that area until the Covid-19 pandemic. Covid had a devastating affect on many households as many breadwinners died. We started feeding door to door in many areas and presently we feed 1 000 hungry people every week,” said Mahabeer.

Hot tasty vegetarian meals are distributed from Hibberdene to Margate, including Marburg, Port Shepstone and Masinenge.

“We are a small group of highly motivated and dedicated volunteers who work on this project. We are motivated by the sincere appreciation of the people that we serve. Many of them put their hands together and tell us that God will bless us. It is encouraging to see that people who battle due to poverty still have firm faith in God. We feel joy in serving such wonderful people,” said Mahabeer.

Anyone able to donate to the organisation can contact Rajen Mahabeer on 082 8362758.
