Ugu women’s chess team crowned KZN champ

At the Chess KZN Awards, Ugu took more accolades.

Ugu Chess team has just proven that they are the masters of the sport. This was evident as they conquered the first-ever provincial women’s chess tournament in Richards Bay last Saturday.

Being crowned the first-ever champions of this tournament was not easy, as they had to defeat other districts, which turned out to be tough opponents.

According to Mzo Madlala of Ugu Chess, they prepared well against well established districts. He said he was honoured to lead such an amazing team.

“I would say there was a lot of joy when we won. This was the first-ever women’s tournament and we won it. It will remain forever in the history books that this tournament was first won by Ugu. We came up against teams from districts who are experts,” he said.

Furthermore, at the Chess KZN Awards, Ugu took more accolades. Madlala won Best Administrator of the Year and Community Builder of the Year.

Speaking about his awards, he said he was humbled and it proved that they are still on track when it comes to developing the sport.

“By winning these awards, it shows we are doing what we are tasked to do, we ensure chess is played in all corners of the district, schools and clubs. We organise tournaments to ensure players are active,” said Madlala.

Other individual winners from Ugu are: Minenhle Ngcongo – Male Player of the Year, Aphendule Baleni – Female Player of the Year and Sfiso Ncayiyane – Chess Teacher of the Year.
