Senior citizens kick off Golden Games
The district games are held to select a team to represent Ugu District at the provincial Golden Games in Durban, from September 17 to 19.
Senior citizens from municipalities under the Ugu District showed up for the 2025 Ugu District Golden Games at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Gamalakhe last Wednesday.
Under the theme: ‘Dlala Mntomdala’, the games aim to promote the well-being of senior citizens and encourage their physical and mental well-being.

The chairperson of the senior citizens in Ugu, Noma Nyathi, said the district games are held to select a team to represent Ugu at the provincial Golden Games in Durban, from September 17 to 19.
Nyathi said the games played included soccer, athletics (including races and relays), ball pass and kick, goal shooting, dress up race and many others.
She said the Golden Games are for people aged 60 and older.
The speaker of Ugu District Municipality, Sizwe Ngcobo, said the senior citizens were representing their local municipalities – Ray Nkonyeni, Umzumbe, Umdoni, and Umuziwabantu.

“We are opening the Golden Games today in preparation for the provincial Golden Games, from September 17 to 19. After the provincial Golden Games, we will then prepare to compete with other provinces at national level. We urge the public to sponsor senior citizens ahead of the provincial games by purchasing tracksuits, soccer boots, takkies, or anything that would make things easier for them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nyathi said the Golden Games are important for pensioners.
“These games celebrate active ageing, aiming to prolong the lives of older persons and ensure they can remain in their communities for as long as possible. These pensioners are selected regardless of their race and gender,” she said.
