Exhibition to highlight power of resilience
The exhibition will explore South Africa's cultural significance, political resonance and broader social relevance.
Margate Art Museum will host the uMgqigqo (Resilience) art exhibition on Friday, September 26.
The exhibition will start at 17:30 and is free to the public.
It will bring together 28 artists from different parts of KwaZulu-Natal, showcasing diverse artworks in sculpture, painting, ceramics and mixed media.
According to Margate Art Museum curator, Siya Sotsu, the exhibition will explore South Africa’s cultural significance, political resonance and broader social relevance.
Sotsu said KZN is renowned for its vibrant artistic community and rich cultural heritage.
“The province has faced a series of devastating challenges in recent years. Among these, the Covid-19 pandemic, catastrophic floods, and the July 2021 unrest have profoundly impacted the lives and livelihoods of visual artists, disproportionately affecting black artists who often operate within marginalised socio-economic contexts,” he said.
He added that the exhibition emerges as a salient site for reflection, dialogue and creativity.
Sotsu explained that the term ‘uMgqigqo’ evokes communal listening, storytelling and the ritual of gathering to share wisdom.
“The exhibition is themed around resilience, a topic that often highlights memory as a living, participatory practice rather than a static archive. September is a month punctuated by commemorations and reflections (from Heritage Month to local cultural festivals). The exhibition will be a platform for ensembles of memory (personal, familial and collective) to engage with present-day realities,” he said.
