Clean water for KwaNositha

Water supply in KwaNositha was affected by illegal connections.

Dry taps are now a thing of the past for KwaNositha residents. This comes after Ugu District Municipality took its pipe replacement project to the area.

Ugu spokesperson, Zimbini Mpurwana, said the KwaNositha and Mbhoshongweni system was originally designed to supply water to the game reserve reservoir.

“However, significant residential development in the area has led to a marked increase in the demand for basic services. As a result, there has been a considerable rise in unauthorised water connections on the pumping main supplying the reservoir, rendering the system ineffective,” she said.

In response, said Mpurwana, Ugu has internally funded and implemented the installation of a new 110mm pipeline to replace the pumping main, which had been significantly affected by illegal connections.

Ward 27 councillor Mdumiseni Cele checks if the tap is working.

She said the initiative serves as an interim measure to optimise the current system while awaiting a comprehensive upgrade project scheduled for the current financial year.

“As of Tuesday last week, the restoration of water supply in the area is progressing steadily. Households that have been without reticulated water for several years are now reporting access to clean drinking water. The process is ongoing, and it is anticipated that the entire area will ultimately benefit from a consistent water supply,” she said.

Ugu mayor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi said with this improvement, the municipality is now positioned to pursue a robust revenue collection strategy in the area, saying that this will contribute to the sustainable maintenance of the water infrastructure.
