Ugu electrical connection enhances water supply
Mayor Sikhumbuzo 'Zero' Mqadi said in press statement that the alternative power supply from the Eastern Cape has been successfully connected and fully tested.
The leadership of Ugu District Municipality has announced its satisfaction with the successful commissioning of the Umtamvuna additional power supply to boost raw water production and delivery to its water treatment works.
Mayor Sikhumbuzo ‘Zero’ Mqadi said in press statement that as of September 22, the alternative power supply from the Eastern Cape has been successfully connected and fully tested.
“Consequently, the Umtamvuna scheme is now operating three additional pumps, providing a much-needed increase in raw water delivery to the water treatment works. Parallel to this development, the long-term project is progressing well, having overcome major obstacles. The successful commissioning has now completed the critical 24-hour monitoring period, with all pumps operating optimally and without incident,” said Mqadi.
He said this internally funded alternative solution was adopted by Ugu Council, on recognising the delays associated with the long-term project to install new electrical lines and secure additional power supply from the Eastern Cape.
“The community was duly informed at all stages, including intermittent progress and unforeseen challenges encountered throughout the process. This development marks a significant milestone for the Umtamvuna-fed community, specifically residents from Port Edward to Southbroom and from KwaNzimakwe to Ezinqoleni, who have waited for over two years,” said Mqadi.
Mqadi added that given the extended wait and the need to ensure system stability, the current water rationing plan or opening and closing (Vula-Vala) will remain in effect during a gradual phasing-out period. “The electrical infrastructure will continue to be monitored around the clock by both Eskom and the Ugu mechanical and electrical teams, as certain elements remain provisional. A subsequent phase of the project involving the new design and rewiring to enable the operation of three low-lift and high-lift pumps will proceed alongside full-scale production.”
He thanked the local community for their support during the implementation of this project. “We are grateful to our communities for their support throughout this endeavour, as we pursue the mutual objective of uninterrupted access to clean drinking water. Together, we can build a stronger and more efficient Ugu district.”
