Sabelo Mchunu, the late treasurer of the ANC’s Michael Nsimbi branch, was remembered at a netball and football tournament held to unite the community and to honour his name.
The venue was Olwandle High in Gamalakhe and it was the inaugural one, with plans to have it in September every year.
Wards 5, 25, 26, 27 and 28 in Gamalakhe all took part, each with a netball and football team.
In the football final, Ward 27 beat Ward 5 by one goal to nil, lifting the trophy and claiming the gold medal.
The runners-up had to console themselves with silver medals.
In netball final, Ward 26 proved to be too strong for Ward 25, beating them 35-26 in an entertaining match.
Sabelo was a keen footballer who played played for Gamalakhe United when the team campaigned in the ABC Motsepe League from 2008 to 2012.
Organiser Mpumelelo Mbono said Sabelo came from a sports-loving family, his father Mahlungulu Nxumalo have played as a defender for Gamalakhe United.
“We have an agreement with the family that we will have this tournament every year in September, as a form of remembering him. Sabelo was a disciplined, hard-working and dedicated player,” said Mpumelelo.
Sabelo left Gamalakhe United when he secured employment in Durban in 2012. He died two years ago after being stabbed when mugged.
