Film masterclass motivates
Andile Buwa advised young people to use their own resources to earn an living, instead of waiting for help.
Andile Buwa of Buwa Films, who is also the chairperson of Ethekwini Filmmakers Association, said the film industry does not have much history of African people as producers or directors.
He added that it is only recently that Africans got an opportunity, as previously disadvantaged people, to participate in the industry and show their talent.
Buwa said this at a film and television masterclass workshop at the Ugu Sport and Leisure Centre last Friday.
“The aim is to empower film makers. As young people from the film associations, we must come together, identify like-minded people with the same vision who are passionate about the industry.”

Attendees were given an opportunity to ask questions.
Siyamcela Ngqobe said that he owns a digital television company which was hacked and all his work was deleted.
He asked for advice as to how such problems can be avoided in the future.
Production company owner Darion Langenhoven asked how he would be able to access a grant or funding to sustain his company.
According to Zamabuya Msibi from the Department of KZN Tourism and Film grants, bursaries and funding are available and explained how these could be accessed.
Buwa mentioned that the government does have grants, however, there will come a time when these grants are not sustainable because of the changing economic challenges.

Instead, he advised young people not to wait for help, but to use their own resources to make a living.
“People nowadays have smartphones with a camera, light and sound. What are you waiting for? Use your God-given talent.”
He urged that young people should do what they need to do and put themselves out there and let the world determine their success.
