Victory for Ebomvini Primary’s soccer stars at tournament in Gcilima
Winning coach, Zwe 'Gigs' Gigaba, said the victory demanded a lot of strength and character from the young girls.
There was much jubilation for Ebomvini Primary, as they conquered the Ugu U12 girls soccer tournament.
This annual tournament which is one of the projects run by Ugu Sports Department was held at the Thokothe Stadium in Gcilima, near Margate last Saturday.
Twelve clubs participated in the sporting showpiece, graced by big names in football, such as representatives of Amazulu FC and Sunflower Women FC.
The winning coach, Zwe ‘Gigs’ Gigaba, said this victory demanded a lot of strength and character from the young girls.
According to Gigs, the game which they enjoyed the most was against Nyandezulu Primary, which they won 1-0. What made it sweeter is that Nyandezulu Primary defeated them 1-0 in the final at the same tournament last year.
“Overall, we played six games, won all with a 1-0 score line, and only drew 0-0 against Delihlazo Primary. We played in a format of four groups, with five teams each. We won our group.”
He said: “My team’s response to instructions was marvellous. Our strategy was to play wide so the opponents would come at us, and we exposed them where they opened while trying to attack us. I am satisfied they played well in front of the scouts.”
