Saps probe illegal felling of protected milkwoods in Southport

Senior prosecutor is set to review case.

A case has been opened for investigation under the National Forestry Act after at least 12 protected milkwood trees were cut down on a property in Strelitzia Road, Southport recently.

Ugu District Saps Communication confirmed that investigations are ongoing and the docket will be forwarded to the senior public prosecutor for a decision.

Milkwood trees (Sideroxylon inerme) are protected under South African law, and it is an offence to damage, destroy, or remove them without a permit issued by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
